DHARAMSALA, May 2: The Education Kalon(Minister) of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), Dr Pema Yangchen launched a Tibetan terminology website and the 11th volume of ‘Glossary of Standardised Terms’ yesterday at Nyatri Hall, Central Tibetan Secretariat.

The Education Kalon attended the event as the Chief Guest and in her address, she thanked the Education Department’s Terminology Desk and the site developers. She further stated that the sustenance of Tibetan culture and religion depends on language as a staggering number of more than half of the 7000 living languages have ceased to exist in the written form.

Dr Pema Yangchen also called on Tibetans from every walk of life to converse purely in Tibetan without mixing up with other languages and to use the standardised terms to enrich Tibetan language.

The Editor and Head of the Terminology Desk, Urgyen Tenzin said that the 11th volume of ‘Glossary of Standardised Terms’ stands accurate and consistent as the standardised terms have been equally derived from the prevalent terminology in Tibet and those in exile.

The CTA’s first ever Tibetan Terminology website, (terminology.net) was developed by Tenzin Samdup, a young Tibetan entrepreneur and the project was funded by DANIDA, Denmark.

The Terminology Desk of the Education Eepartment was formed in 2006 under the former Kalon Tripa Prof Samdhong Rinpoche’s 13th Kashag (Tibetan cabinet) to attend to the need of standardised terms in the Tibetan community.

The Terminology Desk has so far published 11 volumes of ‘Glossary of Standardised Terms’ and has introduced the books by conducting workshops in 13 Tibetan schools across India.
