China protests British Speaker’s meeting with Sikyong Sangay, warns of consequences

DHARAMSALA, Nov 5: Dismayed by the meeting between Sikyong Lobsang Sangay and John Bercow, Speaker of Britain’s House of Commons, China has warned Britain that it could hamper China-Britain relations.
China strongly protested the meeting between the two. “It severely damages China’s core interests,” Chinese State-run media Xinhua quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying as saying in its report Nov 5.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson also called Sikyong sangay a ‘secessionist’ and the ‘ringleader’ of the ‘Tibetan government-in-exile’.
Hua further called the Tibetan administration in Dharamsala a ‘self-proclaimed’ and ‘illegal’ establishment.
“The so-called ‘Tibetan government in exile’ is an illegal organization, and not recognized by any established government in the world,” the report quoted Hua as saying.
The British government was further pressed to fulfill its commitment on Tibet and warned of damages on China-Britain relations as repercussion for the interference.
“The Chinese government resolutely opposes secessionist activities by the ringleaders of the Dalai Lama clique in any country, in any capacity and under any name. China is firmly against any contacts between any foreign officials and the leaders of the clique,” she added.
Sikyong Lobsang Sangay, the political head of the Tibetan people who is on a week-long visit to the United Kingdom, met with John Bercow, Speaker of Britain’s House of Commons on Nov 1.
