Education Kalon launches 40 books on early grade reading

DHARAMSALA, August 7: The Education Department of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) launched 40 books on early grade reading today at Nyatri Hall, Central Tibetan Secretariat.

The Education Kalon(Minister) of the CTA, Ngodup Tsering attended the event as the Chief Guest and launched the 40 books on early grade reading.

20662849_1617524614958609_927736139_oThe education Kalon, in his address, said the project is of great importance and lauded every one behind the project for their contribution. Kalon Ngodup Tsering further encouraged the parents to gift books to their children as present.

“Parents should gift books to children as presents and gifts to cultivate the reading habit of children and to encourage them,” Education Kalon Ngodup Tsering said. “To improve the reading habits and capabilities of the children, we should have more of children books in the school library instead of grand and majestic looking books,” Education Kalon Ngodup Tsering concluded.

20727041_1617522681625469_1186759058_oApart from the children’s books, the Department of Education has been organizing numerous Early Grade Reading Workshops since 2014 for parents as well as primary school teachers with the objective to improve early grader’s academic learning, language development and intellectual development.

The 40 children’s books are divided into five subjects, namely festival, food, animals, relation and play/game, with eight books for each subject. The education department has hired professional writers and illustrators for the children’s books and the books have been reviewed by Tibetan and Indian experts on the subject.

The education department’s Early Grade Reading project is being funded by USAID through The Tibet Fund.
