China makes 2 incursions in just 3 days in Ladakh sector
DHARAMSALA, July 17: Even as the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping indulged in bonhomie emphasizing the need to strengthen bilateral ties and resolve the boundary dispute between the two countries at the recently held BRICS summit in Brazil, China’s People’s Liberation Army indulged in yet another intrusion into Indian territory.
In the past three days, Chinese troops made two incursion attempts in Demchok and Chumar areas of Ladakh in northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, but were pushed back into their territory by the Indian army, according to reports by the Indian media.
Two vehicles carrying PLA troops are reported to have entered Charding Nilu Nullah Junction (CNNJ) in Demchok sector in the wee hours on Tuesday claiming it to be Chinese territory and wanted to have a round of the area. A 30-minute stand-off ensued when they were stopped by the Indian Army and personnel of Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), a force which guards the India-China border.
The stand-off ended after both sides indulged in banner drills reminding each other against transgressing into their respective territory.
Earlier on July 13, Chinese troops riding on horses had entered through Chumar, an area located about 300Kms from Leh on the Indian side of the border which is being claimed by China as their territory. The Chinese troops were stopped by the Indian army and after the usual banner drill, returned to their territory.
PLA has a precedent of making incursions along the Indo-Tibet border in Jammu and Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh.
On June 16 last year, PLA troops walked away with a surveillance camera of the Indian Army which was meant for keeping an eye on the PLA’s activity, though the same camera was returned after a few days.
