Lama stabs fellow Tibetan to death, then kills himself

NEW DELHI, Feb 15: A 46-year-old Tibetan Lama allegedly stabbed another Tibetan to death before taking his own life, police said. The incident took place around 6 pm on Thursday under the Wazirabad Signature bridge, which is under construction, in North Delhi’s Timarpur.

Police said after allegedly stabbing Lobsang (34) to death with a knife, the accused, Tenzing, committed suicide by slitting his throat with the same knife. Tenzing had come to Delhi from Karnataka for translating some scripts into Tibetan language. Lobsang was from Dharamsala.

According to police, Tenzing reportedly had a scuffle with Lobsang. He then whipped out a knife and stabbed Lobsang several times. With the same knife, he then slit his own throat, police said.

Labourers and a security guard at the under-construction site, who witnessed the incident, called police. “The PCR call was made by a security guard. A PCR van reached the spot within minutes and rushed the two to hospital. Both were declared dead on arrival. A case of murder has been registered and investigation is on,” DCP (North) Madhur Verma said.

Police have sent both the bodies for a postmortem examination to ascertain the cause of death.

They have also recorded the statements of welders, labourers and the guard at the construction site.

Police said they had contacted Tenzing’s ashram in Karnataka. The weapon used in the crime has been recovered and a forensic team collected evidence from the crime scene, police said.
