Senior Tibetan monk sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment
DHARAMSALA, Aug 29: A senior Tibetan monk of Rabten monastery in Driru County in former Kham Province of Tibet has been sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment.
Geshe Tsultrim Nyendak, 40, a teacher at Rabten monastery was taken into detention from the Tibetan capital, Lhasa in December 2012 on the suspicion that he participated in political activities against Chinese rule in Tibet.
His family members who had no information about him for almost two years were told by the Chinese authorities on July 31 that he is serving jail term at Chushul prison near Lhasa.
He was subjected to torture while in prison and is said to be in very poor health condition, according to a report by Radio Free Asia.
“His health condition is very poor, and authorities have not acknowledged requests by his family that he be given medical care,” the report quoted a source from Tibet as saying.
Along with Driru County’s Tarmoe and Drongna monasteries, Rabten monastery was shut down in December 2013 after the monasteries refused to participate in “political re-education” campaigns enforced by the local authorities.
