Shallow 5.1 earthquake hits south-west Tibet

DHARAMSALA Dec 5: A shallow earthquake measuring 5.1 on Richter scale struck Nyainrong county in the traditional Tibetan province of Kham early Monday morning.

The shallow quake struck Nyainrong, a small county within Nagchu prefecture, at a depth of about five kilometers at 5:34 am today, according to China Earthquake Networks Center.

The earthquake has not caused any major damages or casualties.

“The tremor only lasted for seconds, no humans or livestock casualties were reported. No homes have been damaged,” Chinese state-run Xinhua quoted Chamdoi, Nyainrong Communist Party Chief as saying in its report.

Nyainrong county is located at about 4,700 meters above the sea level and has a population of around 20,000.
