Sikyong Samgay launches special video greeting for His Holiness’s 80th birthday

DHARAMSALA, Jun 17, 2015: In the run up to the Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s 80th birthday celebrations, the elected head of the Tibetan people Sikyong Dr Lobsang Sangay launched a special video birthday greeting for His Holiness at a press conference held here in Dharamsala on Jun 17.

Sikkong Sangay was accompanied by Department of Information and International Relations Secretary Mr Tashi Phuntsok at the press conference.

The three minute video that included birthday greetings from Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Sikyong Sangay among others seeks to ‘highlight the Dalai Lama’s commitment to contribute to human happiness, to foster religious harmony worldwide and to safeguard Tibet’s culture and environment,’ according to a press release issued by the Central Tibetan Administration.

“According to Tibetan tradition, a person’s 80th anniversary bears special significance and is celebrated as a momentous life milestone. It is hoped the Dalai Lama’s supporters worldwide will share the video as a tribute to his efforts to promote peace. This year’s anniversary will be celebrated by millions throughout the world including Tibetans inside Tibet despite Chinese authorities’ restrictions,” the release said.

The official public event celebrating His Holiness’s birthday will be held at Tsug-lag-khang, the main temple in Mcleod Ganj on Jun 21, which corresponds to the Dalai Lama’s birthday based on the Tibetan calendar (5th day of the 5th lunar month).

Prominent dignitaries and guests from around the world are expected to attend the event that will be attended by His Holiness in person.

The event will open with a special long-life prayer offering for the Tibetan spiritual leader.

The special video birthday greeting for His Holiness is available in English, Tibetan and Chinese.
