Tibetans congratulate and thank India on Independence Day

DHARAMSALA, August 15: The elected political head of the Tibetan people, President Dr Lobsang Sangay congratulated the government and people of India on its 72nd Independence Day at a brief ceremony held at the Kashag Secretariat here in Dharamsala.

Members of Kashag (Tibetan Cabinet), secretaries and senior officials of the Central Tibetan Administration(CTA) attended the ceremony and sung the Indian national anthem as President Sangay hoisted the tri-coloured Indian national flag outside the Kashag Secretariat.

President Sangay wished the government and people of India a very hearty congratulation on India’s 72nd Independence Day on behalf of the CTA.

“India has done more for Tibetans than any other country. Hence the generous and the loving people of India deserves our congratulations and happy Independence day,” President Sangay said.

He also thanked the government and people of India for the kindness, generosity and support shown to the Tibetan cause and the Tibetan people.

Describing India as a great country, President Sangay said that since India’s Independence in 1947, India has achieved a lot as it’s literacy rate has increased from 12% to 74%, has become the 5th largest economy in the world and politically, has become a global power.

When asked about his hopes for Tibet’s Independence, President Sangay said, “Of course, our dream and aspiration is that His Holiness the Dalai Lama returns to Tibet and freedom be restored for Tibetans.”
