DHARAMSALA, Sept 10: Tibetan Women’s Association (TWA) commemorated the 34th anniversary of its re-establishment in exile at an event held at the Club House in Mcleod Ganj earlier today.

The event was attended by the Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament-in-exile, Khenpo Sonam Tenphel as the Chief Guest and former Kalon (minister) of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), Rinchen Khando as the Special Guest.

Speaker Khenpo Sonam Tenphel, in his key address, congratulated TWA on its 34th anniversary and lauded the organization for its contributions and services to the community in every field. The Speaker further said that the potential and success of Tibetan women cannot be judged by whether a women candidate wins the election or not.

Former Kalon Rinchen Khando in her address called on the TWA to stay true to its roots, uphold its founding goals and to contribute to the freedom movement of Tibet

TWA pledged to focus on educating and empowering Tibetan youths besides meeting the needs of the Tibetan Women in the society.

” Today on the occasion of 34th Anniversary of the TWA in exile, we pledge to focus on educating and empowering Tibetan youths besides meeting the needs of the Tibetan Women in the society,” TWA stated in their press release.

The organisation, in their release, also appealed to world leaders “to put pressure on the Chinese leaders to resume the dialogue with the CTA in exile in accordance with ‘Middle Way Approach’ proposed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama”. The organisation also appealed to the UN Committee for Enforced Disappearance to exert pressure on China to release the 11th Panchen Lama.

The organisation was founded on March 12, 1959 in Tibet when Tibetan women gathered together in their thousands to protest against the illegal occupation of their homeland in Lhasa after the Tibetan National Uprising. The organisation was then re-established on September 10, 1984 in exile. TWA now has 58 Regional Chapters across the world.
