Young Kirti monk sentenced to three years for solo protest in Ngaba last year

DHARAMSALA, August 2: A Tibetan monk from Kirti monastery in Ngaba county in the traditional Tibetan province of Amdo was given three years’ sentence for his solo protest last year.

Jampa Gyatso, 22 was given the sentence in a secret trial held behind closed doors with no one representing him, RFA reported Aug 1, citing sources from Tibet and in exile.

13900739_1221084324602642_90915118_n“His family members learned about his sentence yesterday and he is now being held in a prison in Maowun [Mao] county, about 350 kilometers [217 miles approx.] from the Ngaba county seat,” RFA’s source further added.

Gyatso’s present health condition and the charges on which he was sentenced still remains unknown.

Jampa Gyatso was arrested last year as he marched on the streets of Ngaba at around 12 pm on Sep 9 raising slogans calling for freedom for Tibetans. Within minutes into his protest, he was arrested by Chinese police and taken away.
