Tibetans congratulate Australian PM Morrison over Election Victory
DHARAMSALA, 20 May: Both the spiritual and political head of the Tibetan people have extended their congratulations to the Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on his Liberal Coalition party’s remarkable victory in the general elections
The general election in Australia saw the ruling Conservative Coalition led by Prime Minister Scott Morrison staged a “miraculous” victory on Sunday, a result that defied opinion polls and forced the opposition Labor Party’s leader Bill Shorten to resign, media reports said.
“Over the last four decades, I have travelled the length and breadth of Australia and have been deeply touched by the openness and warmth of people from all walks of life. I have also been encouraged by their enthusiasm and interest in my effort to promote a sense of oneness of humanity and closer inter-religious harmony,” His Holiness the Dalai Lama said in a missive addressed to Australian Prime Minister congratulating him on his Coalition Party’s victory in Australia’s parliamentary elections.
“I take this opportunity to express my deep gratitude to the Australian people for their interest and concern for the present situation of the Tibetan people,” the letter read.
The Dalai Lama concluded his missive by wishing the Prime Minister every success in meeting the challenges that lie ahead in fulfilling Australians’ hopes and aspirations.
“I on behalf of the Central Tibetan Administration, heartily congratulate you on your party, the Liberal-National Coalition’s remarkable victory in the Australian general elections and particularly on your excellency’s singlehanded leadership in securing one of the most impressive victories for the Liberal party in the recent history of Australian elections,” the President of the Central Tibetan Administration Dr Lobsang Sangay has said in his congratulatory remarks.
The political head of the Tibetan people has further expressed profound gratitude to the people and government of Australia for supporting the resolution of the issue of Tibet through dialogue and hoped that that new leadership will continue Australia’s longstanding support for CTA’s Middle Way Approach and vocally express it.
Australia hosts over 2300 Tibetans out of which over a thousand are former Tibetan political prisoners.
Australia has had six changes of prime minister over the past 12 years – mostly the result of internal party fights. Scott John Morrison has been serving as the Prime Minister of Australia and Leader of the Liberal Party August 2018 after Australian lawmakers ousted Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
Morrison served as Treasurer of Australia from 2015 to 2018. He was first elected Member of Parliament for Cook in 2007.
Morrison’s government has notably placed restrictions on some Chinese investments and effectively banned Huawei from Australia’s 5G telecommunications network.
