Global Tibetan Student Union launches annual Tibetan Youth Icon Award

DHARAMSALA, 14 June: The Global Tibetan Student Union(GTSU) launched its annual Tibetan Youth Icon Award at a press conference held today at Hotel Norbu House in Mcleod Ganj.

“The Tibetan Youth Icon Award and a cash prize of RS 1,00,000 will be presented to a Tibetan Youth annually starting this year to honour the all-around achievement of Tibetan youth,” the President of the GTSU Madon Nyima said.

The main objective of the award, the GTSU says is to raise the profile of Tibetan youth, to highlight their contributions towards the society and to set a benchmark for the Tibetan youths to look up to as a role model.

The parameters by which the award will be judged include academic excellence, social contribution and capability and the candidates for the inaugural Tibetan Youth Icon Award will be nominated by established student organisations, two each in accordance with the conditions laid down by the GTSU which includes the candidates to be 18-35 years of age, holding Green Book, minimum education qualification of Senior Secondary school and having positive influence and contribution towards the Tibetan community.

The GTSU will then finalise five candidates with the maximum nominations. The finalists will then have to undergo two polls, one by a five-member jury appointed by the GTSU and one by the public through online voting. The juries will score the candidates out of 70 while the public poll carries 30 marks.

The maiden Tibetan Youth Icon Award will be awarded on GTSU’s founding anniversary on 3 August later this year. The prize money of rupees one lakh for the award has been generously sponsored by Norgyal handicrafts and Mandala telecom.

Additionally, the GTSU further announced that the 15th edition of All India Tibetan Student’s Association Meet(AITASM), an inter-college sport, literary and cultural competition among Tibetan students across the length and breadth of India will be held in Tibetan Youth Hostel in New Delhi in the first week of September later this year.

The meet formerly known as Rangzen Rolling was being organised by the Tibetan Students’ Association of Madras (TSAM) until 2016, but owing to the nuisance of the decrease in its members and its financial position, TSAM joined forces with GTSU to organise the meet in 2017 and thereafter, the latter took responsibility to hold the meet since 2018.

The Global Tibetan Student Union, initially known as “Let’s Open the Door to College” was founded in 2016 on the 81st birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

It is an apolitical organisation that runs on its core principle of unity, education and motivation amongst Tibetan youths in particular and world at large.
