DHARAMSALA, 23 Nov: “A historic feat,” says the Central Tibetan Administration(CTA) as its political head, President Dr Lobsang Sangay visits the White House.

President Sangay became the first elected head of the CTA,  commonly referred to as the Tibetan government in exile to enter White House in six decades and tibet.net, the official webpage of the CTA reported it as “A historic feat,” and that “this unprecedented meeting perhaps will set an optimistic tone for CTA participation with US officials and be more formalized in the coming years.”

The report further added that the political head of the Tibetan people’s maiden visit to the White House and to the US State Department in Oct marks a shift in US stand on Tibet.

“Today’s visit amounts to an acknowledgement of both the democratic system of the CTA and its political head,”  the report added.

President Sangay was accompanied by Ngudup Tsering, the Representative of Office of Tibet, Washington DC as he was invited to the White House to meet officials on Friday.

On 2 September 1960, the first Commission of Tibetan People’s Deputies from religious and provincial constituencies took their oath before His Holiness the Dalai Lama, thereby, formally inaugurating the Tibetan democratic system of governance.

The Dalai Lama devolved all his political authority to a democratically elected leader despite the impassioned appeals by the Parliament and the Tibetan people to stay on as the nominal head of state in 2011, thereby completing the transition to a secular democracy.

The development came at a time when the US-China relationship is at their lowest point and it will further infuriate Beijing.
