COVID-19: CTA reports 24 new positive cases,196 Tibetan frontline workers get jab under India’s nationwide vaccine drive

DHARAMSALA, 5  Feb: Twenty four exiled Tibetans in India have tested positive for Covid-19 in the past week, the Covid- 19 Task Force of the Central Tibetan Administration said.

“A total of 24 Tibetans; 15 from Dharamshala, 2 from Clement town, 4 from Dekyiling, 1 from Mainpat and 2 from Mundgod Tibetan settlement have tested positive for the COVID-19 in the last week,” Dr Tsering Tsamchoe said during the committee’s weekly briefing.

The tally of exiled Tibetans in India and Nepal now stands at 1,519 COVID-19 positive cases till date out of which 1,499 have recovered while 41 have succumbed with 29 active cases.

The week also saw 3 Tibetans aged between 78 – 83 years old with comorbidities die due to the infection, Dr Tsering Tsamchoe said.

The committee further informed that a total of 432 exiled Tibetans were under quarantine this week.  Of the lot, 253 are under home quarantine while 179 are under institutional quarantine.

She further informed 196 Tibetan healthcare workers received the vaccination under India’s nationwide COVID-19 vaccination exercise.

The world’s largest inoculation drive kicked off in India on January 16. Within 18 days, India became the fastest country in the world to reach 4 million vaccinations.

India’s Health Ministry stated on Thursday that nearly 4.5 million (44,49,552) beneficiaries have received COVID-19 vaccine shots in merely 19 days.

Dr Tenzin Tsundue appealed to the general public against the circulation of unverified information on the pandemic and the vaccine through social media platforms and instead advised to follow the information and guidelines provided by the WHO, GOI’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare(MHFW) and the US’ Centre for Disease Control.

Dr Tsundue further urged Tibetans not to let their guards down and exercise caution during the Losar. (Tibetan New Year)
