US State Department congratulates new President of Tibetans in exile   

DHARAMSALA, 15 May: The US State Department has today congratulated the new President(Sikyong) of the Central Tibetan Administration. 

“The United States congratulates Penpa Tsering on his election as the Central Tibetan Administration’s (CTA) next Sikyong,” the US State Department spokesman Ned Price tweeted.

The Spokesperson further stated that “We look forward to working with him and the CTA to support the global Tibetan diaspora.”

Penpa Tsering, the former speaker of Tibet’s parliament-in-exile was officially declared the next Sikyong by the EC of the CTA on Thursday. 

He has surpassed Kaydor with 5,417 votes in the final election of the elections to choose the future Sikyong or political leader of the Tibetan people that was held parallel with the election for the members of the 17th Tibetan Parliament-in-exile.

A total of 83,080 exiled Tibetans spread across 26 countries have registered to vote in the final elections as exiled Tibetans went to poll on 11 April 2021.

The election recorded a voter turnout of 77.02% that far exceeded the 65.67%  recorded in 2016 during the last cycle. A total of 604 votes were disqualified.
