COVID-19 weekly briefing : CTA reports 36 positive cases
DHARAMSALA, 17 Sept: The COVID- 19 Task Force of the Central Tibetan Administration(CTA) reported 36 new COVID-19 positive cases among exiled Tibetans in India and Nepal in the past week.
A total of 36 exiled Tibetans tested positive for the COVID-19 in the last week after testing 1,174 Tibetans from 3 different Tibetan settlements in Nepal and 15 Tibetan settlements in India,” Dr Tsering Tsamchoe said during the committee’s weekly briefing.
Last week, the committee reported 24 new positive cases among exiled Tibetans in India.
The tally now stands at 6,310 COVID-19 positive cases to date out of which 6,105 have recovered while 150 people have unfortunately succumbed with 55 active cases at the moment.
Dr Tsamchoe further informed that a total of 969 exiled Tibetans from 13 Tibetan settlements in India and 5 from Nepal were under quarantine this week. While 504 of them are under home quarantine, another 465 are under institutional quarantine.
The committee said that 92.4 per cent of exiled Tibetans in India have been vaccinated. A total of 33206 Tibetans in India are fully vaccinated while 17,004 Tibetans have received the first dose.
The vaccination rate of Tibetans in Nepal stands at 45.59 per cent. A total of 3,191 Tibetans are fully vaccinated while another 533 have received their first jab.
With the festival seasons around the corner, Delek hospital’s Dr Namdol from the committee urged the Tibetans to not let their guards down and continue to exercise caution by following the standard guidelines by wearing masks, keeping social distancing, and washing hands regularly.
She further advised against attending and organising mass gatherings.
Since its outbreak in Wuhan in late 2019, the pandemic has infected 227,026,185 people and killed 4,669,992 people globally according to data from Johns Hopkins University. India continues to sit second in the list of the country worst hit by the pandemic with 33,347,325 active cases and 443,928 deaths.
