Dalai Lama congratulates UK’s new PM Liz Truss

DHARAMSALA, 6 Sept: His Holiness the Dalai Lama has congratulated Liz Truss on her election as Prime Minister of the UK and thanked the UK for its strong interest and support for Tibet.

In a missive addressed to the UK’s new Prime Minister Liz Truss to offer his congratulations, the Dalai Lama has said that he is “very appreciative of our British friends’ strong interest in and support for the Tibetan people’s aspirations for freedom and dignity.”

“Describing the ties between Tibet and Britain, the Tibetan Nobel Laureate has said that “Historically, we Tibetans have enjoyed a long and unique relationship with Great Britain” and that “to this day we maintain close contacts with members of the families of British Government officials who were posted in Tibet prior to 1959.”

The octogenarian Tibetan leader concluded by wishing the UK prosperity, peace and stability.

“These are very challenging times. It is my hope that the UK will continue to prosper and make a significant contribution to the peace and stability of our ever more interdependent world.”

With 81,326(57.4 per cent) votes against her opponent former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak’s 60,399(42.6 per cent) votes, the 47-year-old UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss become Britain’s third female PM with her victory in the Conservative Party leadership contest on Monday.

Following her victory, the UK PM-elect tweeted she would “take bold action to get all of us through these tough times, grow our economy, and unleash the United Kingdom’s potential”.
