Tibetan man arrested on sixth day of Losar for peaceful protest in Kardze county

DHARAMSALA, Feb 26: A Tibetan man was arrested by Chinese police on Feb 14, the sixth day of the Tibetan New Year for carrying a peaceful protest against the Chinese government in the traditional Tibetan province of Kham.

“On Feb 14, the sixth day of Losar(Tibetan New Year), Jamyang Dorjee was arrested by Chinese police for carrying out a peaceful protest against the Chinese government in the market in Kardze county,” a source said.

“Phone numbers of Jamyang Dorjee’s family members and many other individuals known to him were noted down at the local police station. The policemen also threatened them with dire consequences if they speak about the incident in order to prevent the news from reaching the outside world,” the source added.

Jamyang Dorjee, 41 is a native of Buchung village located near Kardze county and was born to father Sangay Gyatso and mother Rinzin Lhatso.

It is also learnt that authorities locked down all communication lines in many of the counties in Kardze prefecture in the run up to the Tibetan New Year which fell on Feb 9, 2016.
