Toronto Cholsum FC, wins North American GCMGC

DHARAMSALA, July 13: Toronto Cholsum FC has won the first North American Gyalyum Chenmo Memorial Gold Cup (GCMGC) football tournament held in Toronto, Canada.

Toronto Cholsum FC defeated New York Tibet United in the final match of the tournament on penalties (4-3) to secure the champion’s title.

13664665_1206997869344621_711632971_nThe tournament was hosted by Tibetan Canadian Cultural Centre (TCCC) in collaboration with Tibetan National Sports Association (TNSA) to commemorate His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s 81st birthday from July 7- 10.

GCMGC is the biggest sporting event in the Tibetan Community and is played annually in the memory of the great mother of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in India.

Its edition in Canada, first of its kind saw 12 teams from the United States and Canada take part in the tournament.

The champion of the Canadian edition of the GCMGC, Toronto Cholsum FC received $3000 in cash prize along with the trophy and New York Tibet United, the runners up team received $1000.

Elated with the success of the tournament, TNSA Secretary Kalsang Dhondup expressed his hopes and willingness to host the tournament on a regular basis.
