TYC holds benefit concert for victims of fire at Lal Qila Tibetan sweater market

DHARAMSALA, Nov 20: The Tibetan Youth Congress on Nov 19 held a benefit concert in Dharamsala to raise funds for the Tibetan sweater sellers of Lal Qilla, Delhi whose shops were gutted by a massive fire on Nov 8.

Number of local Tibetans and non-Tibetan supporters showed up at the concert held at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts to express their support and solidarity with the victims.

The fire at the Tibetan refugee sweater market, reportedly caused by a short circuit, ravaged close to 140 stores in the market to ashes, incurring a loss of 12 crore rupees.

Indian singers Prashant Tamang and Abhishek Kumar of Indian Idol fame came all the way from Delhi and performed at the concert without charge to express their support for the Tibetan victims. The Indian singer duo belted out a series of latest Bollywood songs, keeping the crowd grooving and asking for more.

Dharamsala’s very own rock band JJI Exile Brothers rocked the stage with their original songs and guitar licks. TYC President Tenzing Jigme who is also known for his guitar skills joined the JJI brothers on stage and showcased his musical skills, much to the delight of the crowd.

Other performers include darling of the crowd, Mariko who stunned the crowd with several dance numbers and Tenzin Trinley, an intern at TYC who surprised the crowd with some melodious pop songs.

TYC raised INR 94,900/- in the form of donations and INR 100,400/- through ticket sales from the concert. All the proceeds will go directly to the Tibetan sweater sellers of Lal Qilla, Delhi.
