Sherab Gatsel Lobling celebrated its Silver Jubilee

DHARAMSALA, May 26: As the number of Tibetans arriving into exile from Tibet has declined over the years, the school has only some 80 students now, if the situation continues, then it is not likely for the school to remain in the long run, hence we organized this Silver Jubilee of the school, the Principal of Sherab Gatsel Lobling said.

Tsering Youdon, the Principal of Sherab Gatsel Lobling made the remarks in her address while stating why the twenty-fifth anniversary of school is being celebrated.

Sherab Gatsel Lobling today marked its Silver Jubilee Celebration. The President of the central Tibetan Administration, Dr Lobsang Sangay attended the celebration as the Chief guest along with some Tibetan Parliamentarians, former directors and principals of the school, former and present staffs of the school and around 350 alumni.

President Sangay congratulated the former and present administration, staffs and students of the school. The political head of the Tibetan people in his address, spoke highly of the former students of the school and said, as some former students have become Parliamentarians and journalists, the present students should aim to become President and Cabinet Ministers.

Under the guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the exile Tibetan administration, the Dharamsala Tibetan Reception Centre under the security branch opened Sherab Gatsel Lobling, a school for young Tibetan refugees from 18- 30 years of age on April 1, 1993 with 107 students.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama named the school Sherab Gatsel Lobling in 1998 and on July 18, 2002, the Tibetan Reception Centre handed over the administration of the school to the Department of Education (DOE) of the Central Tibetan Administration.

DOE then handed over the administration of Sherab Gatsel Lobling to the Sambhota Tibetan schools society on January 3, 2011. Until now, a total of 6426 young Tibetan men and women have received education at the school.
