Suspected Chinese spy arrested from Majnuka-Tilla

DHARAMSALA, Sept 21: A suspected Chinese spy has been arrested from Majnuka-Tilla, in New Delhi, the capital of India.

The alleged Chinese spy has been identified as Charlie Peng (39) was reportedly arrested for running an espionage ring in India in a top-secret intelligence operation by Delhi Police’s special cell, reported the Times of India.

According to the report, the suspect was arrested on September 13 from north Delhi’s Majnu Ka Tila and was in police custody since then.

The police reportedly produced the alleged Chinese spy before the court of chief metropolitan magistrate Deepak Sehrawat on Sept 20 and obtained an extension of remand till Monday.

The police have further informed the court that the accused was involved in “anti-national activities” and asked for more time to interrogate him, the report noted.

The police had recovered an Indian passport and an Aadhaar card from the accused along with a Fortuner SUV, Rs 3.5 lakh in Indian currency, 2,000 dollars and 22,000 Thai baht.

According to the documents, the accused was living in DLF Gurgaon and runs a company from a plush office from there. Peng came under the radar after sleuths of an intelligence agency tracked his movements to north-eastern states of India as well as some places in Himachal Pradesh, the report noted.

Charlie Peng hails from Nanjing area in China and the authorities suspect him of being a highly trained Chinese agent.

The suspect came to India five years ago, married an Indian girl and, then, managed to get a passport from Manipur a few months ago and allegedly runs a currency exchange firm as a front for ‘hawala activities’, the police said.

Police have conducted raids to round up those people who helped Peng get a passport and Aadhaar card and they are now trying to ascertain if the suspect has any links with the Chinese arms force. Further investigations are on.
