5.8 magnitude earthquake strikes Shigatse, no casualties reported

DHARAMSALA, Dec 24: An earthquake measuring 5.8 on Richter scale struck Xaitongmoin County in Shigatse City in the traditional Tibetan province of U-Tsang earlier this morning

The 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit Xaitongmoin County at 3:32 a.m. Monday. The epicentre was measured at 30.32 degrees north latitude and 87.64 degrees east longitude. The quake struck at a depth of 8 km, the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) reported.

Although the traffic and telecommunications in the region have remained undisturbed and they were no casualties reported,  more than 2,100 people are said to have been evacuated as the investigators have reportedly found cracks in some rural houses while damages were reported on some live-stock sheds in the county, Chinese state-run Xinhua news agency reported citing the county’s publicity department.

The high seismicity in the Himalayan region, considered to be an earthquake-prone area, results mostly from the continental collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates.
