TWA observes International Women’s Day
DHARAMSALA, March 8: Tibetan Women’s Association (TWA) today marked the International Women’s Day, an annual event recognised across the world celebrating and supporting the women’s rights movement.
“We should consider today as one of the most important days for the women. We all know that women across the world are subjugated. Women are always treated differently and denied equal opportunity, we are considered less capable,” said Dolma Yangchen, the President of TWA.
This year’s official theme is “Balance for Better”, which advocates the need for a gender-balanced society.
Speaking on the importance of gender-balanced society and the need of collective action and shared responsibility, “We stand here today to tell the world that women should be given equal opportunity either at home or in the community across the world. Women are capable but there is a need of a gender-balanced society to build a better and stronger community across the world,” she added.
As March 8 is observed as International Women’s Day to celebrate women’s achievement, TWA has organised a photo exhibition to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, political and religious achievements of Tibetan women at the at the main Square of McLeod Ganj here in Dharamsala.
Purple and white balloons adorned the TWA’s ‘Exemplary Tibetan Women’ photo exhibition celebrating Tibetan women’s achievement displayed on two purple board. The two colours have a historical significance with International women’s day. While purple signifies justice and dignity, white represents purity.
“Through this exhibition, we are celebrating the achievements of Tibetan women in accordance with this year’s theme ‘Balance for Better’ and to encourage and to inspire Tibetan women,” said Tenzin Khando, TWA’s Project Officer.
International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8 every year. It commemorates the movement for Women’s rights. The day was initially celebrated to mark the women’s right to vote in Soviet Russia in 1917 until it was adopted in 1975 by the United Nations.
The UN statement for this year’s International women’s day encouraged to “think equal, build smart, innovate for Change.”
