DHARAMSALA, June 16: A women only protest was carried out against land grab by Chinese government in Phenpo Lhundrub county in the so-called Tibet Autonomous Region on 13 and 14 June.
About 100 Tibetan women from Gachoe village of Gaden Chonkhor township protested against land grab as their farm lands were destructed to pave way for government construction project without any compensation, reports Free Tibet, June 15.
The tactic of holding women only protest was aimed at reducing Chinese police’s aggravated use of force against the protesters. The plan worked as no arrests and violence were reported.
Highlighting local authorities’ failure to respect environmental rules and implementing China’s own law, the peaceful women protesters marched holding pictures of Chinese leaders and flags so that they won’t be labeled ‘splittist’ and face harsh punishment.
