Dalai Lama congratulates PM Modi on re-election

DHARAMSALA, May 14: His Holiness the Dalai Lama has congratulated India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he gets re-elected into power by the people of India.

The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama in a missive addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated him and the National Democratic Alliance for their thumping victory in the 2019 Indian general election to constitute the 17th Lok Sabha,  the lower house of India’s bicameral Parliament.

“It fills me with admiration and pride to see India, the world’s largest democracy, emerging as a leader in the community of nations,” the Dalai Lama said in the letter and added, “India is one of the great ancient civilizations, a distinctive and fundamental feature of which has been ahimsa and Karuna — non-violent conduct motivated by compassion.”

The Tibetan Nobel laureate further expressed the Tibetan people’s immense gratitude to the Government and people of India for their unwavering support and hospitality for the last six decades that has enabled Tibetans to preserve their ancient cultural heritage in exile. The Tibetan leader concluded his missive by offering his prayers and good wishes for the 68-year-old Indian Prime Minister as he sets on to fulfil the hopes and aspirations of the people of India.

“I pray you will be successful in meeting the challenges that lie ahead in fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of the people of India.”

Bharatiya Janata Party became the second political party in the Indian history to come back to power and the first since 1984 after its victory with a strong mandate.

Official data from the Election Commission showed Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party winning 302 of the 542 seats available with a lead in 1 more constituency bettering their 282 seats won in 2014 general election.
