COVID-19: CTA reports 232 new cases 2 deaths in the last week
DHARAMSALA, 6 Aug: The COVID- 19 Task Force of the Central Tibetan Administration reported 232 new COVID-19 positive cases and 2 deaths among exiled Tibetans in India in the past week.
A total of 232 exiled Tibetans tested positive for the COVID-19 in the last week while 2 Tibetans have passed away due to the infection after tests were conducted on 1,201 Tibetans out of which 23 Tibetans are from 3 different Tibetan settlements in Nepal while 1178 of them are from 17 Tibetan settlements in India,” Dr Tsering Tsamchoe said during the committee’s weekly briefing.
Of the lot, the oldest one is a 92-year-old and the youngest, a 1-month-old infant.
Dr Tsamchoe further informed that a total of 1,630 exiled Tibetans from 13 Tibetan settlements in India and 6 from Nepal were under quarantine this week. While 880 of them are under home quarantine, another 75 are in institutional quarantine.
The tally now stands at 5,948 COVID-19 positive cases to date out of which 5,334 have recovered while 140 people have succumbed with 454 active cases.
As the cases seem to be rising among the Tibetan community in particular and India at large. Dr Tenzin Tsundue from Delek Hospital commended the community’s active participation to get vaccinated and added: ” those who are fully vaccinated have higher immune against Delta variant as opposed to those who aren’t vaccinated.”
The committee said that a total of 21,007 Tibetans in India have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine while 28,726 have received both doses.
Meanwhile, 831 Tibetans in Nepal were administered the first jab of Covishield while 2,039 Tibetans have received Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
Since its outbreak in Wuhan in late 2019, the pandemic has infected 200,988,417 people and killed 4,268,853 people globally according to data from Johns Hopkins University. India continues to sit second in the list of the country worst hit by the pandemic with 31,856,757 active cases and 426,754 deaths.
