Protect Tibetan plateau to save world, says Dalai Lama
[TNN] Shimla, December 1: With the global summit on climate change kicking off in Paris, Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama has said Tibetan plateau needed to be protected for the environmental health and sustainability of the world. Tibetan government-in-exile has claimed that over the past 50 years, 82% of the ice has retreated and over two-thirds of glaciers could be gone by 2050.
The way global warming has left glacier melting at a faster rate, scientists and green activists are worried about the future of mankind as melting of glacier would not only lead to water crisis, but pose risk of glacial lake outburst floods. “This blue planet is our only home and Tibet is its roof. As vital as the Arctic and Antarctic, it is the third pole,” said Dalai Lama, in a recent statement.
