Tibetan-origin man held for obtaining passport ‘using fake docus’; probe launched

DEHRADUN: A day after a man of Tibetan origin was held for obtaining a passport by allegedly using fake documents, the city police said on Saturday it has begun an inquiry into the matter. Jampel Chojin visited United States, Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan, among other countries, using the passport.
Acting on a tip-off, police had arrested Chojin, who was living in a monastery in Vikasnagar, on Friday.
Dehradun senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sadanand Date said Chojin had registered himself with the foreigner regional registration office (FRRO) here in June 2000. “There were discrepancies in the papers submitted to the FRRO and the documents used for procuring the passport and,” the SSP said.
The papers given to the FRRO state Chojin was born in Lakhanwala in Dehradun. But the documents submitted to the passport office identify him as Knochok Dorje and say he was born in Arunachal Pradesh, Date stated.
