Tibetan singer nominated for 2021 Grammy

DHARAMSALA, 25 Nov: Tenzin Choegyal, a Tibetan singer has been nominated for the 2021 Grammy Awards,  presented by the Recording Academy to recognize achievements in the music industry.

The Tibetan singer has earned his nomination in the Grammy’s Best New Age Album category for ‘Songs From the Bardo’ that he collaborated with Laurie Anderson, a renowned American visual and performing artist and Jesse Paris Smith.

They were nominated for the Best New Age Album category, alongside other talented artists such as Priya Darshini, Superposition, Jim “Kimo” West and Cory Wong & Jon Batiste.

“What a beautiful way to wake up to the news of the album, Songs from the Bardo nominated for Grammy,” Australia based Tibetan singer and songwriter who earned his first-ever Grammy Award Nomination on Tuesday said in a Facebook post.

“We are super excited, happy and honoured with much gratitude. This album is very close to my heart and labour of love with support from so many amazing friends. May it benefit many beings,” he added.

Choegyal concluded by expressing his “gratitude to all who has believed and supported my musical journey for all these years.”

” Now I am an officially Grammy Nominated Tibetan/Australian Artist,” he concluded.

The Sacred Tibetan Chants: The Monks of Sherab Ling Monastery (Naxos World) by Tibetan Monks of Palpung Sherab Ling Monastery, near Bir Tibetan settlement, won the first Grammy for Tibetans in 2004.

Other Tibetans who have earned Grammy nomination include Nawang  Khechog, a celebrated Tibetan enthno-musician in the ‘New Age Music’ category at the 2001 Grammy and Ngawang Tashi Bapu, a Tibetan Buddhist monk from Arunachal Pradesh in India in the ‘Best Traditional World Music’ category at the 2006 Grammy.

The 63rd annual Grammy Awards is scheduled to be held on 31 January to be hosted by Trevor Noah from “The Daily Show’s.”
