TYC marks 48th founding anniversary with grand finale of ‘Martyrs Memorial Basketball Tournament’
DHARAMSALA, Oct 8: Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC), the largest Tibetan non-governmental organization in exile, marked its 48th founding anniversary on Oct. 7, by hosting the grand finale of ‘Martyrs Memorial Basketball Tournament’ at the basketball court located near the headquarters of Central Tibetan Administration (CTA).
The tournament comprising of matches in both men’s and women’s category was organized by the Dharamsala chapter of TYC to express solidarity with the Tibetan martyrs who have sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the Tibetan people and to promote the importance of good health among exiled Tibetans.
Hundreds of Tibetan sports enthusiasts thronged the basketball court to watch the event unfold at 2 pm in the afternoon.
This year, six women’s team and ten men’s team took part in the tournament which spanned for twelve days.
Munsel team beat their opponent Norling United to win the women’s final match while Garuda Team defeated Sarah team in men’s final.
“The Tibetan people in Tibet have been relentless in their continued struggle in multitude forms for regaining Tibet’s independence, so that the fatherland and homesteads of the Tibetan People that are captured by the communist Chinese intruders may be recovered. In an effort to strive to fulfil these aspirations of the Tibetan people, Tibetans youths living exile, driven by a will to ensure the survival of their cherished cultural heritage and by a sense of loyalty to their homeland, established the Tibetan Youth Congress on 7th of October in 1970,” TYC stated in their press release.
The Deputy Speaker of the Tibetan parliament-in-exile, Acharya Yeshi Phuntsok who attended the grand finale as the Chief Guest and the President of the TYC Tenzin Jigme both gave a brief address and handed over the prizes.
