Pema Tseden’s ‘Jinpa’ wins best screenplay at 75th Venice International Film Festival

DHARAMSALA, Sept 10: Renowned Tibetan filmmaker Pema Tseden took home the best screenplay award for his latest film ‘Jinpa’ at the 75th Venice International Film Festival.

Jinpa, written and directed by Pema Tseden has reportedly received rave reviews for its world premiere in the Orizzonti at the 75th Venice International Film Festival earlier on Tuesday before the film was declared the winner of the best screenplay in the Orizzonti (Horizons) program at the 75th Venice International Film Festival on Saturday.

“For me, standing here to receive this award is an especially glorious moment. Thanks to the jury and thanks to the investors, cast members and my creative team for completing this film with me and fulfilling our dreams,” Pema Tseden said in his acceptance speech, reports

Jinpa, Pema Tseden’s sixth feature film was based on two novels;  Tsering Norbu’s ‘The Slayer’  and ‘I Ran Over a Sheep’ written by Pema Tseden himself.

The 75th Venice International Film Festival was held at Palazzo del Cinema di Venezia, lido in Italy from August 29 till September 8. The film will also be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival which opened on Sept. 6, and the film will soon be released in Cinemas across China.

Born in a nomad family, Pema Tseden earned legions of fans through his critically acclaimed films, making him the most successful and celebrated Tibetan filmmaker. He is one of the few Tibetans to have graduated from the Beijing Film Academy.

Tseden’s other films have also won acclaim from critics and juries around the world. While Tharlo was awarded the Best Adapted Screen Play at the 52nd Golden Horse Film Festival and Awards and Artistic Exploration Award at the 23rd Beijing College Student Film Festival 2016, his second feature, ‘The Search’ was selected for screening at the Locarno Film Festival while his third, ‘Old Dog’ won prestigious prizes at festivals across Asia.
