DHARAMSALA, 22 Oct: Both the spiritual and political heads of the Tibetan people have extended their congratulations to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau following the Liberal Party’s victory in Canada’s national elections.
Congratulating the Canadian Prime Minister on his re-election, the Dalai Lama commended on “Canada’s policy of compassionate action in taking in vulnerable refugees who have fled horrific and unthinkable conflicts in several parts of the world.”
“As an honorary Canadian citizen myself, I feel proud of this generous, humanitarian gesture,” the Dalai Lama wrote.
The Tibetan Nobel Laureate has further expressed gratitude to the government and people of Canada for their generosity in resettling Tibetan refugees since the early 1970s.
The Dalai Lama concluded by wishing PM Trudeau every success in meeting whatever challenges lie ahead in meeting the aspirations of the people of Canada.
“I, on behalf of the Central Tibetan Administration, heartily congratulate you on your re-election as the Prime Minister of Canada and the electoral victory of the Liberal Party in the 43rd federal election of Canada,” CTA President Dr Lobsang Sangay has said in his congratulatory remarks.
Recalling Canada’s 15th Prime Minister, Hon Pierre Trudeau who happens to be the father of Justin Trudeau, President Sangay has highlighted Trudeau senior’s kindness and leadership in the rehabilitation of Tibetan refugees in Canada from the early 1970s onwards.
“Carrying this tradition forward, today under your leadership, Canada hosts the 3rd largest Tibetan refugee community outside India. Furthermore, the people and government of Canada stand steadfast in their support for the six-decade-long Tibetan freedom struggle, Tibet’s pursuit of a meaningful genuine autonomy within China and a substantive dialogue with the Chinese government based on the Middle Way Approach,” he said.
President Sangay has also congratulated all the members of the Parliamentary Friends of Tibet for their re-election as well.
“On this occasion, I would also like to recognise the tireless efforts and leadership of our Parliamentary Friends of Tibet in their steadfast advocacy for the Middle Way Approach and the issues related to Tibet.”
“I heartily congratulate each one of you on winning the elections,” he concluded
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberals held onto power after a closely fought election on Monday but were reduced to a minority government that will need the support in Parliament of a smaller left-leaning party.
