COVID-19 weekly briefing: CTA reports 44 positive cases, 1 death 

DHARAMSALA 19 Nov: The COVID- 19 Task Force of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) reported 44 new positive cases among exiled Tibetans in India and Nepal over the past seven days.

A total of  44 COVID-19 positive cases and 1 death were reported among exile Tibetans in the last seven days after testing 706 Tibetans from 13 Tibetan settlements in India and 1 Tibetan settlement in Nepal,” Dr Tsering Tsamchoe said during the committee’s weekly briefing.

The cases, Dr Tsamchoe said were reported from Tibetan settlements in Ladakh, Mundgod, Dharamsala jurisdiction, Bir, Bylakuppee, Kollegal and Nepal.(Swayambu)

The tally now stands at 6,859 COVID-19 positive cases to date, 6,623 recoveries, 158 deaths and 78 active cases.

Dr Tsamchoe further informed that a total of 192 exiled Tibetans from 9 Tibetan settlements in India and 1 from Nepal were under quarantine. While 64 of them are under home quarantine, another 128 are under institutional quarantine.

The vaccination rate of Tibetans in Nepal stands at 6,980 Tibetans completely vaccinated and 48 Tibetans partially vaccinated.

Additionally,  45,801 Tibetans in India are fully vaccinated while 4,582 Tibetans have received the first dose. 

Since its outbreak in Wuhan in late 2019, the pandemic has infected 256,086,918 people and killed 5,132,341 people globally according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

India continues to sit as the 7th worst-hit country by the pandemic in the world with 34,489,623 cases to date and 465,082 deaths. 

Dr Tenzin Namdol from Tibetan Delek Hospital urged Tibetans who are eligible and haven’t taken the vaccine yet to do so for their personal benefit and for the welfare of the community. 

She also called for the Tibetan school administrations to exercise caution and employ preventative measures in schools. 

Dr Namdol further urged Tibetans to not let their guards down and to continue to exercise caution by following the standard guidelines by wearing masks, keeping social distancing, and washing hands regularly.
