State Department travel advisory Level 3: Reconsider travel to China

The US Department of State’s Travel Advisory on China – Level 3: Reconsider Travel.

DHARAMSALA, 11 April: Amid rising COVID-19 cases and tough restrictions, the US has warned Americans against travelling to China.

“Do not travel to the PRC [People’s Republic of China]’s Hong Kong special administrative region, Jilin province and Shanghai municipality due to Covid-19-related restrictions, including the risk of parents and children being separated,” read a level 3 travel advisory issued by the US Department of State that calls on Americans to avoid travel due to serious risks to safety and security.

“Reconsider travel to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) due to arbitrary enforcement of local laws and COVID-19-related restrictions,” the State Department advisory added.

The new China travel advisory further warns that “the PRC government arbitrarily enforces local laws, including carrying out arbitrary and wrongful detentions and using exit bans on U.S. citizens and citizens of other countries without due process of law.”

It further stated that China uses arbitrary detention and exit bans “to compel individuals to participate in PRC government investigations, pressure family members to return to the PRC from abroad, influence PRC authorities to resolve civil disputes in favour of PRC citizens, and gain bargaining leverage over foreign governments.”

As China continues to fight its worst-ever Covid-19 outbreak with around 19 crore people in 23 cities now under full or partial lockdowns, Shanghai, the epicentre reported nearly 25,000 locally transmitted COVID-19 infections on Sunday in what the media reports said was the worst Covid outbreak since the virus emerged in China’s central city of Wuhan in 2019.
