Choeying Kyi bags bronze at 2022 World Athletics Championships

DHARAMSALA, 16 July: Choeying Kyi, a Tibetan athlete has added another feather to her cap by securing the Bronze medal at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon in the US.

The Tibetan Olympic gold medalist won the Bronze in the women’s 20k race walk at the 2022 World Athletics Championships on Friday.

Kimberly GARCÍA LEÓN from Peru and Katarzyna ZDZIEBŁO from Poland secured the Gold and the Silver Medals with both of them setting new records by clocking at 1:26:58 and 1:27:31 respectively.

The most decorated Tibetan athlete clocked 1:27:56 to finish the race to take home the bronze Medal.

The 2022 World Athletics Championships began on Friday and will conclude on 24 July.

Choeying Kyi is the first Tibetan Olympian and medalist. She competed in both the 2012 and 2016 Olympics held in London and Rio. In the 2012 London games, she was initially awarded the bronze medal in her event but she was later awarded the gold medal as both the gold medalist and the silver medalist were later stripped off their medals respectively for positive doping tests.

The Tibetan race walker has previously won two other medals at World Championship- silver at the women’s 20 km race walk in 2019 at Doha and a bronze in 2011 at Daegu. 

Besides, she also secured a silver medal for the same event at China’s 13th National Games in 2017.

Choeying Kyi was born in Tsochang in the Traditional Tibetan province of Amdo.
