TYC announces series of events ahead of 60th anniversary of National Uprising day

DHARAMSALA, Feb 18: Tibetan Youth Congress(TYC) the largest Tibetan NGO in exile, announced a series of campaigns to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising day to honour 60 years of resistance and pay tribute to the resilience and sacrifice of the Tibetan martyrs.

In honour to commemorate the 60 years of resistance, TYC has lined up various programs for three days from March 10-12 in the Indian Capital, TYC President Tenzing Jigme said at the press conference held earlier today at its headquarter.

TYC has planned a peace march, people’s rally, protest and vigil in New Delhi spanning over three days and called on all Tibetans and Tibet supporters living in India and neighbouring regions to participate in this movement.

“Tibet is in a critical state and at this moment in history, it is imperative for us to come together united in our stand for our nation and our people. Let us make our voices heard for our brothers and sisters inside Tibet,” TYC stated in their press release.

The Tibetan National Uprising Day, observed on March 10, commemorates the 1959 Tibetan National Uprising in Lhasa, March 10, 2019 marks 60 anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising Day.

TYC will commemorate and dedicate the 60th anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising day to thousands of Tibetans who have sacrificed their lives and thousands who continue to suffer due to China’s illegal occupation, TYC added.

On March 10, 1959, sensing a Chinese plot to abduct His Holiness the Dalai Lama, more than 300,000 Tibetans surrounded his summer palace, Norbulingka to protect his life and to protest against the Chinese occupation.

Seven days later, His Holiness the Dalai Lama left Lhasa and fled to India. 80,000 Tibetans followed him into exile.

What gave birth to this historic event was a culmination of events marked by the invasion and occupation of Tibet, subjugation of its people, and pursuit of actions which threatened the life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama under a policy of naked and all-out aggression pursued by the communist government of China.
