Tibetan monk arrested for lone protest in restive Ngaba county
DHARAMSALA, May 3: A Tibetan Buddhist monk was arrested by Chinese police on May 2 in restive Ngaba county in Amdo, Tibet for carrying out a lone protests against China’s continued rule in Tibet.
The monk identified as Thupten carried out his lone protest at around 3 pm (local time) on the street now popularly known as ‘martyr’s street’ in Ngaba county.
“With a portrait of His Holiness the Dalai Lama held over his head, he marched on the martyr’s street shouting slogans. Within minutes, two Chinese policemen overpowered him and took him away,” Lhase Sonam, a Tibetan living in exile with contacts inside Tibet cited a source as saying.
Thupten belongs to Kirti monastery and hails from nomadic camp No. 2 in Meruma township in Ngaba.
His condition and whereabouts remain unknown for now.
