Clement Town to host 26th GCM Gold Cup over 1-12th Oct

DHARAMSALA, 6 Sept: The 26th Gyalyum Chenmo Memorial Gold Cup (GCMGC/GCM) football tournament which has to be cancelled last year and postponed again this year finally remains on track to go ahead in October.

“Finally, the wait is over!  TNSA and the host Clement Town are very delighted to announce the confirmed date for GCMGC 2021 from 1st – 12th October,” Tibetan National Sports Association (TNSA), the organiser of the tournament announced.

Like major sporting tournaments and events across the world in 2020 that were either cancelled or postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the biggest sporting event in the Tibetan Community has to be cancelled owing to the deteriorating Covid-19 situation in India.

Clement Town, awarded by the TNSA to host the 26th GCMGC in 2020 will now host the event later this year after the tournament has to be postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19. Seventeen teams were to take part in the tournament which was originally scheduled to kick off on 14th May 2020.

The organisers have further stated that all the teams must report on 28th September before 5:00 pm, made it mandatory for all the players and the managers to produce RT-PCR negative test and to be injected with at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccines.

DYSA Mundgod will now look to win the cup this year to complete their third straight GCMGC title.

GCM football tournament, the most prestigious tournament in the Tibetan community was first held in 1981 in memory of the late mother of the Tibetan spiritual leader, His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Though the tournament was organized by various bodies for more than twenty years, Tibetan National Sports Association (TNSA) took charge of organizing the tournament annually since 2003.

Based on the performance in the GCM tournament, TNSA selects players for the Tibetan National Team which occasionally competes in tournaments held in India as well as foreign countries.
