Tibetan parliament passes unanimous resolution of gratitude to former US Speaker Nancy Pelosi
DHARAMSALA, 18 March: The 17th Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile(TPIE) today unanimously passed a resolution of gratitude to the former speaker of the United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi for her continued and constant support for the Tibetan issue over the last three decades.
The TPIE’s official motion of gratitude was presented in the house by the Parliamentarian Tsering Lhamo and supported by parliamentarian Lobsang Thupten during the 4th day of the 17th TPIE’s 2023-2024 budget session.
The legislators expressed unanimous support for the resolution in the house.
The resolution declared Nancy Pelosi, the first and the only female US Speaker of the House, a true champion of international democracy, human rights, and climate issues, and acknowledged her for being an old friend of Tibet who has been constantly supporting Tibet over the last several decades.
It further acknowledged her tireless work as the speaker of the United States House of Representatives to call out China for its gross human rights violations in Tibet besides calling on China to have a meaningful dialogue with the representatives of the Dalai Lama to resolve the Sino-Tibet issue and the passage of bipartisan Acts and resolutions to support the Tibetan issue in the house.
The resolution concluded with an expression of gratitude to Speaker Pelosi on behalf of the Tibetans both inside and outside Tibet for her firm and constant support for the just cause of Tibet.
Additionally, the lawmakers unanimously recommended hosting a grand celebration of gratitude here in Dharamsala, the exile headquarters of the Tibetan people to the former Speaker, one of the oldest and constant friends of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Tibet.
She announced her decision to step down as the democratic leader in the chamber in November last year.
Nancy Pelosi is the first and the only female US Speaker of the House to date.
She was elected to the office for the first time from 2007 to 201. In 2019, she became the first politician in 58 years to take back the gavel in the US. She was then reelected as the 53rd Speaker of the US House of Representatives in Jan. 2021.
