History often turns on moments when warnings are dismissed. In 1952, Gyalo Thondup—brother of His Holiness the Dalai Lama—visited Tibet and returned with a stark message: China’s intentions were not benign. He warned the Tibetan Government that Beijing was preparing to consolidate its control and strip Tibet of its autonomy. Instead of heeding his words, officials laughed. Within a few years, Tibet’s independence was extinguished, its culture suppressed, and its people subjected to the iron grip of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

Preparing for the CCP’s Eventual Transition. History teaches us that authoritarian regimes rarely collapse in a neat or predictable fashion. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP), despite its formidable machinery of control, is not immune to the pressures of economic stagnation, demographic decline, internal factionalism, and external confrontation. The question is whether and when the CCP will face a moment of breakdown or transition, and whether the international community will be ready when it does.

The Tibetan struggle has always been defined by moral clarity. Yet within that moral compass lies a crucial distinction: passive resistance and non‑violence are not interchangeable. Tibetans inside Tibet, living under the weight of surveillance and repression, must understand why passive resistance is not only pragmatic but essential — while non‑violence remains the broader ethical creed guiding the spirit of the movement.

Beijing has consistently refused to negotiate with the Dalai Lama. This stance is not tactical indecision but a deliberate strategy: the Chinese leadership is playing a waiting game, anticipating that His Holiness’s passing will allow them to control succession and neutralise the Tibetan issue. While this approach may consolidate short-term authority, it carries significant risks for legitimacy, stability, and international relations.
