China fumes as US strengthens its support to Tibet, Taiwan
DHARAMSALA, 29 Dec: China has as expected, registered its strong objection to the Tibetan Policy and Support Act of 2020 that US President Donal Trump signed into law on Sunday.
After President Trump put pen to paper on the bill that was passed by the US congress last week defying strong criticism from China, Beijing’s foreign affairs minister has yet again expressed its displeasure.
China’s Foreign affairs minister Zhao Lijian China was “resolutely opposed” to the TPSA along with the Taiwan Assurance Act of 2020 that boosters US’ support to Tibet and Taiwan respectively; a thorn in the side of China, the Reuters reported.
“The determination of the Chinese government to safeguard its national sovereignty, security and development interests is unwavering,” he was quoted as saying in the report at a regular media briefing.
The Chinese spokesperson further described the US’ strengthening of its support to Tibet and Taiwan as “interference in China’s internal affairs” and that the US should do away with the Acts which targets China in order to avoid harming Sino-US relations.
Last week, the Chinese state-run media CCTV quoted Beijing’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin as saying that “China resolutely opposes the passing of acts by the U.S. Congress which contain China-related negative content” as the US Congress passed the TPSA 2020, a bill entailing sanctions against Chinese officials interfering with the selection of the 15th Dalai Lama and to deepen US’ support for Tibet among others.
China strongly objects to the passage of the Tibetan Policy and Support Act of 2020, along with the contents and clauses on Taiwan and Hong Kong in the legislation passed by the US Congress.
