China’s US Ambassador rebuffs poll declaring 82% of Americans have unfavourable view of China

DHARAMSALA, 6 May: China’s ambassador to the United States, Qin Gang has repudiated a poll by Pew Research Centre that declared 82% of Americans have an unfavourable view of China saying that nobody he met told him they don’t like China.

Rejecting the findings of the survey, which found a 6-point increase in negative views from 2021 and a new high since the Center began asking this question on its online American Trends Panel in 2020, the Chinese ambassador to the US has said that the survey “failed to give people a whole picture of China-US relations, particularly people-to-people relations,” the Forbes reported on Thursday.

The report further added that Qin told Forbes in an interview last week that the survey “is not objective,” and that nobody he met told him they don’t like China.

Contesting the survey findings, he has further said that he met people from different communities in the US and “most of them told me that they were interested in China.”

“ They wished China-U.S. relations well. They wanted to do business with China. They wanted to learn Chinese. They wanted to go to China,” Qin has said.

the report noted that “It’s easy to see why Qin feels that way, as Qin, who became the ambassador last year “had just returned from a week-long visit through three Midwestern states in April that focused on trade ties and bright spots in the relationship since the Washington and Beijing forged diplomatic ties in 1979.”

“Many of the Americans that Qin met on his trip had warm words for both Qin and U.S. commercial relations with the country that has gone on since 1980 to become the world’s second-largest economy and the biggest export market for American agricultural products,” the report concluded.

Last week, a Pew Research Center survey declared that a record high 82% of Americans have unfavourable opinions of China.

“Around eight in ten (82%) adult Americans have unfavourable opinions of China, including 40% who have very unfavourable views of the country,” the nonpartisan fact tank that informs the public about the issues, attitudes and trends shaping the world has said in its report.
