EU calls out China over numerous unfulfilled promises
DHARAMSALA, 23 June: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel have called out China for their “under-delivered promises, one by one.”
Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel have listed a long list of Beijing’s unfulfilled promises that included the communist regime’s human rights, and disinformation campaigns attributable to Chinese cyber activities, bilateral investment through World Trade Organisation reforms to climate change targets among others as they took to the press podium after the two long summit calls – first with Premier Li Keqiang and then with President Xi Jinping, reports the South China Morning Post.
She has described the EU-China relationship as ‘not an easy one.’
“The relationship between the EU and China is simultaneously one of the most strategically important and one of the most challenging that we have,” she was quoted as saying in the report.
The Eu leaders have further warned China of negative consequences over Hong Kong security law that reignited mass protests on the island.
China, already risking US’ “constant threats of economic decoupling” is reported to have downplayed “the differences with the EU in a bid to steer the bloc away from more unfavourable measures against China.”
The approach, however, seems to have failed as the European Council President has stated in the report that “We have to recognise that we do not share the same values, political systems, or approach to multilateralism,” with China.
Additionally, the European Commission President has called on China “to devote more high-level political momentum to its talks with Brussels,” that the report noted as “a veiled attack on Beijing’s one-sided focus on negotiations with Washington.”
