COVID-19: 474 Tibetans test positive in week

DHARAMSALA, 21 Jan: The COVID- 19 Task Force of the Central Tibetan Administration reported 474 new cases among exiled Tibetans in India and Nepal over the past seven days as the cases continue to increase in India and across the globe.

“A total of 474 new positive cases were reported among exiled Tibetans in India over the past seven days after testing 1,551 Tibetans from 16 Tibetan settlements in India and 4 from Tibetan settlements in Nepal,’ Dr Tsering Tsamchoe said during the committee’s weekly briefing.

Dr Tsamchoe added that a total of 701 exiled Tibetans from 14 Tibetan settlements in India and 4 from Tibetan settlements in Nepal are under quarantine. While 450 of them are under home quarantine, 251 are under institutional quarantine.

The tally now stands at 7,963 COVID-19 positive cases to date, 7,144 recoveries, 162 deaths, and 657 active cases.

The committee announced that 49,167 Tibetans above 18 in India are fully vaccinated while another 1,090 Tibetans have received the first dose. The toll in Nepal stands at a total of 6,990 Tibetans completely vaccinated.

Additionally, a total of 1,888 Tibetan children (15-17) in India and 46 from Nepal also received their first dose, and 385 Tibetan frontline workers and 1,673 Tibetans above 60 years of age in India have also been inoculated with the Booster doses that New Delhi started amid surging cases on 3 Jan.

Since its outbreak in Wuhan in late 2019, the pandemic has infected 342,607,332 people and killed 5,574,413people globally according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

India is now the 5th worst-hit country by the pandemic in the world with 342,607,332 cases to date and 5,574,413 deaths.
