CTA President Launches 16th Kashag’s Inaugural Women’s Empowerment Conference
DHARAMSALA, 4 Nov: The Women’s Empowerment Desk of the Department of Finance, Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), marked the commencement of a significant three-day event titled ‘Dialogue on Women’s Empowerment within the Tibetan Community’ on 3 November 2023, at Asia Health Resorts in Dharamsala.
The President of the CTA, Penpa Tsering, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and underscored the historic nature of this event. He pointed out that this conference, organised by the 16th Kashag (Cabinet), is the first of its kind during his leadership, with a sole focus on women’s empowerment. President Tsering encouraged all participants to actively engage in the discussions, with the goal of compiling responses that are not only relevant and practical within the Tibetan societal context but also capable of influencing revisions to current policies on women’s empowerment.
Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of Tibetan society adapting to the changing times and eradicating all forms of gender-based violence.
Dr Poonam Smith Sreen, Deputy Director of the General Development Office of USAID, attended the event as a special guest. She highlighted the significance of recognising the diverse customs and norms in every society, both apparent and subtle, and commended the Tibetan community for hosting such conferences, which facilitate comprehensive discussions and the compilation of responses.
The three-day conference, spanning from November 3 to November 5, will delve into various themes, including women’s leadership within the Central Tibetan Administration, grassroots women’s leadership, women’s health, mental health, education, gender, and law. It will also address issues related to violence against women, aiming to foster discussions and generate solutions.
The event, poised to serve as a pivotal platform for promoting dialogue, collaboration, and advancement in the realm of women’s empowerment within the Tibetan community, saw the participation of CTA department secretaries, members of the sexual harassment prevention committee, and representatives from non-governmental organisations, with a total of 64 attendees.
