Heads of UK and US intelligence warns of growing threat from China
DHARAMSALA, 7 July: The intelligence services of the UK ad the US have collectively warned that the world faces a growing long-term threat from China’s ruling Communist Party.
While media reports quoted the director of the UK’s MI5 Ken McCallum as saying that the UK now runs seven times as many investigations into China as it was four years ago while declaring that the Chinese government’s “covert pressure across the globe” amounts to “the most game-changing challenge we face,” Chris Wray, the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) has stated that China “poses the biggest long-term threat” to economic and national security, for the UK, the U.S. and allies in Europe and elsewhere as Beijing is bent on o stealing their technology for competitive gain.
Highlighting growing threats posed by the Chinese government, the Mailonloine quoted MI5’s Director as saying that “MI5 has already more than doubled our previously-constrained effort against Chinese activity of concern. Today we’re running seven times as many investigations as we were in 2018.”
Reuters quoted the FBI Director as saying that “The Chinese government is trying to shape the world by interfering in our politics (and those of our allies, I should add).”
He has further said that China “poses an even more serious threat to Western businesses than even many sophisticated businesspeople realize,” and that China is ‘set on stealing your technology, whatever it is that makes your industry tick, and using it to undercut your business and dominate your market.”
The development marks the first instance as the UK and the US domestic intelligence services held a rare joint address in London on Wednesday to share their concerns on the growing Chinese economic espionage.
Additionally, The MI5 Director has declared that the heads of the FBI and MI5 shared the public platform to “send the clearest signal we can on a massive shared challenge: China.”
