Activist Chemi Lhamo throws her hat into ring for Parkdale High Park City Council election

DHARAMSALA, 7 July: A Tibetan-Canadian has thrown her hat into the ring for the election of the City Council of Parkdale High Park, Canada.

Chemi Lhamo made the official announcement on Thursday which marks the 87th birthday of the Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

“On this auspicious day, I’ve got some news for you!  I’m officially a CityCouncil Candidate for Parkdale Highpark, It’s time to bring the community into the halls of government. ” the Tibetan-Canadian Activist announced in a Facebook post.

She has cited the woes of the working families of Parkdale -High Park, – one of the hardest-hit neighbourhoods during the COVID-19 pandemic- and the housing problems of the residents as well as the unprecedented climate change that demands BOLD action as the pressing issues she will address as she announced her candidacy for the election.

“We can’t be an afterthought for our city.  That’s why I’m running to be your next Councillor in Parkdale – High Park,” she has said while thanking the community for the love and support she received.

“I’m forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support from our community. It is you who has raised me into who I am today. Thank you & let’s do this!”

The election is scheduled to take place later this year in Oct.

While the activist just launched her political career, Bhutila Karpoche another Tibetan-Canadian woman is the highest public office holder following her re-election as the MPP of the Parkdale-High Park.

Ontario New Democratic Party’sTibetan-Canadian MPP, Bhutila Karpoche secured her re-election as the MPP with 5,964 votes (53.3 per cent) of the ballots in June.
