DHARAMSALA, 3 Nov: Aftab Pureval, an Indian Tibetan has been elected as the first Asian American Mayor of Cincinnati city in the US state of Ohio.

“Words can’t express how honoured and excited I am to be the next Mayor of Cincinnati. Tonight, we made history! let’s get to work!,” Pureval, the son of a Tibetan mother and Indian father has said after his victory.

The 38-year-old became the new Mayor of Cincinnati after he defeated David Mann, a city councillor and fellow Democrat to win the Mayoral election.

Mann has congratulated the new Mayor in a tweet that read, “Congratulations to Aftab on his well-deserved victory.”

“I have spoken with him and wish him nothing but the best, and it has been the honor of my lifetime to serve this community as a councilman, mayor, and member of congress throughout my career. Thank you, Cincinnati!” he added.

Pureval, a Democrat, has previously served as the Hamilton County clerk of courts before he quit to unsuccessfully run for the US House of Representatives last year.

Pureval will now succeed Mayor John Cranley, who is reportedly seeking Ohio’s Democratic nomination for governor in 2022.

A son of an immigrant, Pureval is viewed as a rising political star in the state, reports NBC.
